The Central Railway has achieved a record revenue of INR 73.67 crore through scrap sales during April and May 2026 under its ‘Zero Scrap’ campaign, launched to promote environmental sustainability and efficient utilisation of resources. This is the highest revenue generated from scrap disposal during the April–May period so far.

The large-scale drive, undertaken in the run-up to World Environment Day, saw the participation of officials, employees and contractors across all five divisions of Central Railway. The initiative aims to convert unused railway material into revenue-generating assets while ensuring environmentally responsible disposal.

According to railway officials, Central Railway earned INR 34.08 crore in April 2026 and INR 39.59 crore in May 2026 through the disposal of various categories of scrap material. The campaign led to the sale of 5,926 metric tonnes of railway rails, 6,337 metric tonnes of ferrous scrap, 539 metric tonnes of non-ferrous metal scrap, and 26,882 railway sleepers. In addition, three locomotives, eight coaches and 29 wagons that were no longer in use were disposed of through the drive.

The Stores Department carried out a special exercise to identify and remove scrap lying across railway premises, workshops and remote locations. The systematic disposal of these materials contributed significantly to the record earnings.

Among Central Railway’s divisions, Pune Division emerged as the top contributor, generating INR 15.65 crore from scrap sales. It was followed by Nagpur Division with INR 11.77 crore, Parel Workshop with INR 11.05 crore, Bhusaval Division with INR 8.72 crore, Matunga Workshop with INR 7.38 crore, Mumbai Division with INR 7.33 crore, and Solapur Division with INR 4.59 crore.

Apart from scrap disposal, Central Railway has also focused on the reuse of serviceable assets. As part of this effort, a functional but unused Rotatek printing machine was transferred to the Nashik Printing Press instead of being scrapped. The machine, valued at INR 8.76 crore, was redeployed to ensure better utilisation of resources and preserve its value.

Officials said the ‘Zero Scrap’ campaign has helped improve operational efficiency, generate additional revenue, reduce waste, and support environmental sustainability. The drive focuses on identifying unused assets and converting them into productive resources while maintaining cleaner and more organised railway premises.

The scrap sold under the campaign included iron, steel, aluminium, brass, copper and other metal waste, as well as discarded railway track components and heavy infrastructure materials. Owing to strong market demand for such materials, the initiative has generated substantial revenue for the railway administration while promoting responsible resource management.
