A demand has been raised to ban the use of plastic confetti in party poppers used during birthdays, weddings, processions and other public celebrations in Mumbai.
Party poppers are commonly used during celebrations, but the plastic pieces released from them can create significant waste and pose a challenge for the city's waste management system. Environmental concerns have prompted calls for restrictions on the use of plastic confetti.
Activists and concerned citizens have urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take steps to prevent the use of plastic-based confetti in such products. They have pointed out that the lightweight plastic pieces are difficult to collect after celebrations and can eventually enter drains and other parts of the urban environment.
The issue is particularly relevant during large public events, where large quantities of confetti may be scattered across roads and public spaces. Cleaning up such waste adds to the workload of civic sanitation workers and increases the amount of plastic entering the city's waste stream.
The demand comes amid growing concerns over plastic pollution and the need to reduce the use of single-use plastic products. Restricting plastic confetti in party poppers could help reduce unnecessary plastic waste generated during public and private celebrations.
The BMC is therefore being urged to examine the environmental impact of these products and consider appropriate measures, including a possible ban on plastic confetti used in party poppers.
