Major medical organisations in Maharashtra, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Maharashtra State, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI), and various specialist associations, have jointly announced an escalation of their statewide agitation over the proposed BHMS–CCMP registration process and several pending issues concerning resident doctors.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the organisations said they had repeatedly engaged with the state government in a constructive manner, but their concerns remain unresolved. They alleged that there is no clear legal or regulatory framework governing the proposed BHMS–CCMP registration process and that the government has failed to provide any concrete assurances regarding the issue.
The medical bodies said the unresolved concerns could have far-reaching consequences for patient safety, the quality of medical education, and the credibility of Maharashtra's healthcare system.
As part of the protest, MARD, ASMI and specialist associations have extended full support to the IMA Maharashtra's ongoing suspension of elective and non-emergency medical services. They announced that they would actively participate in the protest from 12 am on August 5 until 6 am on August 6, during which all routine and non-emergency medical services will remain suspended.
The organisations further warned that if the Maharashtra government fails to take satisfactory action by 6 am on August 6, they will launch an indefinite strike, which will also include the suspension of emergency medical services.
The joint statement said the decision had been taken reluctantly, emphasising that the medical profession has always remained committed to medical ethics and patient welfare. However, the organisations claimed that continued inaction by the government had left them with no alternative but to intensify their agitation to safeguard the future of healthcare in the state.
The protesting bodies have urged the Maharashtra government to immediately halt the proposed BHMS–CCMP registration process and initiate discussions to resolve all pending issues to prevent further disruption of healthcare services.
