The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has introduced advanced technology to improve cleanliness along Mumbai’s coastline and nearby areas. Two unmanned electric boats have been deployed near Gateway of India and Badhwar Park to collect floating waste from the sea.
These eco-friendly boats collect nearly 80 to 90 kilograms of floating garbage every day. The initiative is being carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Ashwini Joshi, and Deputy Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar. The project is also supervised by Deputy Commissioner Chanda Jadhav and Assistant Commissioner Gajanan Bellale.
The boats are fully powered by electricity, making them environmentally safe and sustainable. They are equipped with modern systems such as the Vehicle Traffic Management System (VTMS) and Global Positioning System (GPS), which help monitor navigation, operational range, and safety.
The unmanned boats are designed to efficiently collect floating waste such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, and other debris commonly found in seawater near the city’s coastline. Earlier, removing such waste manually was both difficult and time-consuming. With the introduction of these automated boats, the waste collection process has become more organized and effective.
Since the boats operate entirely on electricity, they do not release harmful pollutants into the water like diesel or petrol-powered vessels. This makes them safer for marine ecosystems and aquatic life while supporting Mumbai’s broader environmental and cleanliness goals.
