Mumbaikar’s don't be surprised if you fail to see plastic water bottles (PET) in restaurants, government offices, college canteens, educational institutions or restaurants located near tourist spots across the state. This is because, the state’s environment department has put up a proposal to ban plastic bottles before the state cabinet and if they get a nod, then plastic water bottles will be banned.

The department has prepared a rough draft of the same which is likely to be tabled before the cabinet soon.

Other than plastic water bottles, the other items to be covered in the proposed ban are one-time use containers which are made from plastic and thermocol.

Satish Gavai, additional chief secretary, state environment department told Hindustan Times,

We are intending to ban the use and sale of PET bottles in all four and five starred hotels, government offices, canteens and educational institutions. The ban will also cover bed and breakfast hotels located at tourist places. However, the final decision has to be taken by the state cabinet.”

Gavai also clarified that one will be able to buy bottled water in shops across the state.
