In Mumbai, on Tuesday, December 22, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, supported by different farmer organisations held a day-long demonstration at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), demanding that the three new farm laws be scrapped.
Moreover, the protestors chanted ‘Corporate hatao, kisan bachao’, as the activists assembled at the sprawling BKC, having marched from Mumbai suburban collector’s office to the Ambani Estate in the midst of heavy police force that tried to stop them from proceeding.
As per reports, apart from Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, Communist Party of India (CPI), Lok Sangharsh, Prahar, All India Students Federation participated in the protest to show solidarity with farmers’ agitation in Delhi in order to display their anger against centres pro-corporate agriculture policies.
Currently in India, the farmers have been protesting alongside the Delhi borders against the new farm laws. They are protesting against the three laws, namely, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020, that took effect from September 27 after President Ram Nath Kovind's assent.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, December 23, on the occasion of Kisan Diwas 2020 to celebrate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, the agitating farmers are to skip a meal as they protest against the farm laws. The farmers are to further meet the union leaders on Wednesday in order to decide the next course of action with regards to further talks with the government. On Sunday, December 20, the agricultural minister wrote a letter to the leaders and asked them to fix a convenient date for the next round of talks. The leaders met on Tuesday, however, the date will be finalised today.
