The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of three well-known Mumbai restaurants, Shalimar, Noor Mohammadi Hotel and Rehmania Restaurant, after inspections revealed serious food safety and hygiene violations.

The action was taken after the establishments allegedly failed to rectify deficiencies despite being issued notices and given time to comply with food safety regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Shalimar Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., located in Bhendi Bazaar, had its licence suspended on July 14 after a follow-up inspection found that several shortcomings identified during an inspection in April remained unaddressed. The FDA said these included unhygienic kitchen conditions, absence of mandatory records related to raw materials and edible oil quality, failure to conduct drinking water quality tests, inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, and lack of insect-proofing measures.

Noor Mohammadi Hotel was also found to be operating under unhygienic conditions. According to the FDA, inspectors observed greasy kitchen floors, peeling paint, improperly stored raw materials, unclean utensils, open windows allowing insects and birds into food preparation areas, inadequate pest control, and missing supplier records.

The licence of Rehmania Restaurant in Umerkhadi was suspended after officials reported poor food storage practices, rusting equipment, peeling walls, lack of insect-proof doors, and the absence of mandatory food safety and drinking water quality records.

The FDA said the licences will remain suspended until the establishments fully comply with food safety norms and all identified deficiencies are rectified.

The enforcement action is part of the FDA's ongoing drive to strengthen food safety standards across Maharashtra and follows similar action taken against other food establishments in Mumbai in recent days.
