Kamala Mills Fire: Live Updates from Lower Parel

A major fire broke out in Kamala Mills compound in Mumbai. As per reports, the fire was reported at a pub located in the compound. As per the information received, the fire broke out at around 12:30 AM, due to the construction being made of plastic and bamboos, in one of the pub terraces.

Six fire tenders, four fire engines, and one emergency ambulance have reached the spot to control the situation. Further, the signals of popular news channels Times Now and Mirror now have also been affected.

2:25pm - Mojo's Bistro issues an official statement.

We are extremely saddened by the incident. Mojo's has all its fire safety norms, certificates, and procedures in place. The staff are thoroughly trained in fire drills hence our staff was able to evacuate all our guests and themselves out to safety with zero injuries. There were NO cylinders on our premises. We are fully complying with the authorities to help in any way we can. Our prayers and deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this gruesome incident.

1:54pm - Total 124 people affected by the Kamala Mills fire, of which 55 were injured, 14 dead,14 more admitted and 41 have been already discharged across 7 hospitals in Mumbai. The deceased have only been in KEM Hospital.

11:56am - The root cause of the fire is yet unknown with people speculating short circuits, sheesha/cigarette sparks and other reasons. The fire department will confirm the cause after investigation.

11:30am - The BMC had served One Above a notice for illegal encroachment. In May 2017, the BMC razed the encroachment on the open space after which the club went on to build on it again. The BMC had further issued notices in September, October and November which were ignored.

10:40 am - Postmortem began around 4:10 am and got over around 6:50 am. PM was conducted by Dr. Ravindra Deokar and the forensic team, 10 doctors and 6 attendants were present.

10:30 am- 12 out of 19 people have got discharged

10:00am - 28 year old Khushboo Mehta who was celebrating her birthday at Mojos Bistro, Kamala Mills lost her life to the raging fire. Her grandfather speaks up

4am - 15 people have lost their lives in the fire that started on the third floor of the Trade Centre building in Kamala Mills. Although the fire has been doused, the death toll has been on the rise for over 2 hours now. The root cause of the fire is yet unknown.

1:25am - Times Now and Mirror Now TV channels lose signal. All offices evacuated.

1:15am - Kamala Mills compound is popular as it hosts many corporate offices such as Times Now, TV9, The same Radio Mirchi, many other pubs, and restaurants. Considered as one of the most popular areas in Lower Parel, the premises is considered to be busy all around the day, due to many offices functioning 24x7.

As per sources, the offices have been evacuated and the traffic in the area is being regulated. Here are some visuals from the location.

Fire engines and other emergency services were immediately rushed to the spot but the fire was too big to control fast enough. Initially no casualties were reported but several of the injured were rushed to KEM Hospital. Consequently, the death toll started rising as more bodies were recovered from the building. 

The original cause of the fire is still unknown and it might be a while till the actual reason is figured out. The top priority of the officials now will be to manage the situation and make sure no rumours are spread. Stay tuned to this space for more information.
