The first phase of the non-vehicular zone to be built in the historical and culturally significant Kala Ghoda area of Mumbai has been completed. The process of the second phase is also in the final stage. It will be the first ‘pedestrian zone’ in Mumbai.

The first ‘pedestrian zone’ of the city will be dedicated to the people of Mumbai by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, said Mumbai BJP President MLA Amit Satam.

Mumbai BJP President MLA Amit Satam inspected the beautification work of the iconic Kala Ghoda area in Mumbai on Thursday. BJP’s Colaba corporator Makarand Narvekar was present with him on this occasion.

Bollards will be installed at the entrances and entry to vehicles will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Various activities related to art, crafts and music will be organized in this area. Also, a tourist attraction is being developed.

MLA Amit Satam said that this initiative is being implemented like many cities in the world.

Similar to Buchanan Street in Glasgow and Carnaby Street in London, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to develop the roads in the Kala Ghoda area as pedestrian walkways.

This will make the area safer and a tourist attraction, said Corporator Makarand Narvekar.

Under this project, the roads in the Kala Ghoda area including V. B. Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Ropewalk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street and B. Bharucha Road have been renovated. There will be a pedestrian zone on these roads on Saturdays and Sundays.

The special attraction of this project is the four beautiful sculptures created by artists from the Sir J. J. School of Art.

This has added to the artistry of the area. ‘Al fresco’ dining facilities will be started here soon. Therefore, tourists will be able to enjoy their meals in an open environment.

Works such as stone-paved pedestrian paths have been completed. Narvekar said that colorful murals and artistic architecture (street artifacts) have been installed to enhance the cultural appeal of the area.
