Vendors from the Dadar Fish Market on Senapati Bapat Marg have refused to shift to Wadala, a plot selected by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for temporary relocation.
A member of the Dadar Fish Market Association stated, “We have already been permanently relocated here. So, the question of temporary relocation does not arise.”
Residents Protest, Cite Traffic Woes
Last month, residents of Swarajya CHS in Dadar staged a protest against the presence of the fish market, citing increased traffic congestion in the area, especially after the closure of Elphinstone Bridge. They claimed that the fish market was contributing to the worsening traffic situation.
Local MLA Mahesh Sawant supported the residents' protest. He, along with MP Anil Sawant and other residents, held a meeting with BMC officials, demanding the immediate relocation of the fish market.
Vendors Stand Firm
However, fish vendors have strongly opposed the move. A representative of the market association said, “We were not invited to any joint meeting with the Commissioner. Our case is ongoing in the Bombay High Court, and the court has granted us permission to continue our business operations.”
The standoff continues as residents push for removal and vendors assert their legal right to remain.
