A big tourist centre will soon be built on 50 acres of barren land in Gorai. Union Minister Piyush Goyal made this announcement in a review meeting held at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters. It has been 18 years since the Gorai landfill was closed and now the land is suitable for reuse. Therefore, the municipal administration is considering which project should be started to promote tourism on this land.
Landfill closed in 2007
There was a municipal landfill in Gorai. This landfill was closed in 2007. The land has been cleared by disposing of the waste here. This also resulted in the release of methane gas stored in the soil. Also, due to the seepage of rainwater over the last 18 years, the land is now suitable for reuse. Also Read: Mumbai’s Public Transport to Go Digital with Unified Ticketing System

Efforts to make it a tourist spot
The municipal administration had earlier tried to set up a waste-to-energy project at the Gorai landfill. However, the citizens here are opposing it. Therefore, this project will not be built here. The BMC is now making efforts to make this place a tourist spot. Municipal officials said they were considering setting up an eco-friendly park, zoo or theme park at the place.
