Mumbai – Now, flat owners can seek information about their housing societies under the Right to Information Act.

This welcome verdict, that has come from the Mumbai High Court’s Aurangabad bench means that members of cooperative societies and cooperative housing societies can now ask for information with the help of an RTI. “We welcome the decision of the Bombay High Court,” said Chandrakant Dalvi, president, state cooperatives commissioner.

Usually, societies refuse information regarding the society, income, member’s information, information about buildings and so on. The high court has now ruled that societies come under public authority and  if they are asked to give any sort of information, the information should be shared. During the hearing, the fact that certain societies do not follow Supreme Court’s directives in this regard was also pointed out.

“This move will bring in more transparency,” said Ramesh Prabhu, president, Mahaashtra Societies Welfare Association.
