Yellow Heat Alert Issued for Mumbai and Nearby Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, warning of intense heat in the coming days. Some areas may experience a heatwave on Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, Palghar and Ratnagiri have been issued a heat alert for Monday.

The region has already experienced high temperatures earlier in March, with IMD warnings issued on March 8 and 9. On March 10, Mumbai recorded 40°C, the highest March temperature in the past five years. On Monday, Santa Cruz recorded 36.5°C, with temperatures expected to rise to 38°C on Tuesday.

While coastal areas of Maharashtra face heat and dry weather, inland districts may see rainfall. Districts such as Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur, and Dharashiv may experience thunderstorms with lightning and winds blowing at 40–50 km/h.

Tips to Stay Safe in the Heat

What to do:

  • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if not feeling thirsty.

  • Consume hydrating drinks like ORS, lassi, rice water (torani), lemonade, or buttermilk.

  • Wear light, loose, and light-colored clothing.

  • Seek medical attention immediately if feeling dizzy or nauseous.

  • Workers should avoid outdoor work between 12 PM and 3 PM.

What to avoid:

  • Avoid going outside between 12 PM and 3 PM.

  • Do not go out without covering your head or face.

  • Avoid cooking during peak heat; keep kitchens well-ventilated.

  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks as they dehydrate the body.

  • Avoid high-protein, spicy, oily, or stale foods.

These precautions are crucial to prevent heat-related illnesses during the upcoming hot days in Mumbai and nearby districts.
