Another patient has fallen from a bed at Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle West, intensifying concerns about patient safety. A 75-year-old woman, admitted for high blood pressure and fits, fell from her bed on Monday night while in the women’s ward with her daughter.

Dr. Neelam Andrade, Director of Major Municipal Hospitals and Acting Dean of Cooper Hospital, said that side rails would be installed on beds if required, acknowledging the rising concerns.

This is the third such incident in recent days. On November 24, 80-year-old Sonabai Chavan died after a fall from her hospital bed while receiving treatment for a heart condition. Another patient, Zeinab Rasool Ahmed Sheikh, who had near-total vision impairment and had recently undergone eye surgery, fell on November 30. Her son-in-law Mohammad Javed Siddiqui said she fell when relatives stepped away briefly to turn off the fan. She sustained a minor head injury but is reported to be stable.

Complaints of negligence at the hospital are not new. According to health activist Tushar Bhosale, 26 medico-legal cases have been registered at the Juhu police station in the past three months. Between July and September 2025 alone, 26 patient falls and six rat-bite cases were reported, prompting some corrective measures from the municipal administration.

In light of the repeated incidents, families of patients are increasingly demanding that all hospital beds be equipped with protective side rails.
