India’s first mangrove park is set to open to the public by mid-August in Gorai village, Mumbai. The project is said to be nearly complete. The park is being developed by the state government's Mangrove Cell and will be spread across 8 hectares.

The project was launched in 2021 with the goal to increase public understanding of mangrove ecosystems and the biodiversity they support. The total project cost is estimated at INR 33.43 crore.

Aaditya Thackeray, former environment minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA, said that the project began during his term in office. He expressed happiness that another project he launched is close to completion.

The key attraction of the park is a 750-metre elevated wooden boardwalk. It runs through dense mangrove patches and ends at a scenic viewing deck by a stream. It is inspired by the elevated walkway at Malabar Hill. The park also has an 18-metre watchtower. It provides views of the forest and native and migratory birds.

A two-storey nature interpretation centre is part of the park’s features. It contains exhibits and a small library focused on mangroves. The centre will act as a learning space. The building will also house a gift shop and a rooftop café, both with nature-related themes.

All structures and walkways in the park are elevated to protect the fragile ecosystem. The park’s operations will run on solar power. The final phase of work includes painting, lighting, and landscaping.

An entry fee has been proposed once the park opens. However, the state government is yet to approve it. The money collected through tickets will be used for park maintenance.
