India Shines in Alabama: Mumbai Fire Brigade Bags 4 Medals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Fire Brigade created history by winning its first medal on the first day of the World Police and Fire Games held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. 

A six-member team from the Mumbai Fire Department participated in the Indian team. It included firefighter Govind Bijle, female firefighters Ekta Golkar, Siddhi Sonawane, Shweta Davane and Unnati Chilkewar. The team was led by Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dr. Deepak Ghosh.

The competition was held in Birmingham from June 28 to July 6. More than 5,000 athletes from over 70 countries participated in this prestigious competition. Competitors showcased their skills in over 60 types of games and drills. Officers and employees from 47 fire departments from India participated in the competition, including personnel from the Mumbai Fire Department.

All these contestants have been congratulated by BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Amit Saini, and Deputy Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad.

India finished third in the competition with a total of 588 medals, including 280 gold, 178 silver and 130 bronze medals. Dr. Deepak Ghosh from Mumbai Fire Department won the bronze medal in the Ultimate Firefighter category (age 55 individual category). 

Unnati Chilkewar won the silver medal in the Stair Race Casual Wear category.  Shweta Davane won the silver medal in the stair race full gear category. 

Earlier, in the All India Fire Services Games held in New Delhi in January 2025, the Mumbai Fire Service had also performed brilliantly by winning a total of 40 medals, including 16 gold medals.
