For the first time in the history of 172 years, organ donation took place at J J Hospital. Jalgaon resident Sangita Mahajan met with a road accident on 17 July in which she got head injuries and was admitted to the local hospital. However, she was not recuperating at the hospital and so she was moved to J J Hospital on 20 July.

After conducting various tests, she was declared brain dead by the doctors. The latter convinced the family to donate the organs. Likewise, Sangita’s family donated liver to a 56-year-old patient who is a Barshi’s resident and eyes were donated to the J J Hospital.

Sangita’s husband Rajesh Mahajan lost his mother and so he wanted to keep her wife alive through organ donation.

“This is the first time we have carried out organ donation at J J Hospital and we are happy. This is a successful story for our hospital. The hitch is there is a lack of awareness when it comes to organ donation as 70% people come from the rural area and to convince them for organ donation is a challenge,” said Dr. T P Lahane, MS, J J Hospital.
