Khar Road Railway Station has been completely upgraded by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). The reconstruction of Khar Road station cost INR 85 crore. It is the first station to be redeveloped under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A. The INR 950 crore will modernise 17 major suburban railway stations across Mumbai.

More than 1.6 lakh people use Khar Road station every day. The new design provides a safer and more comfortable experience for commuters. Here's what new:

  • The most important change is a new residential platform. It is 270 metres long and 10 metres wide. It is meant to reduce overcrowding and help with smoother travel during rush hours.

  • One of the biggest features of the upgrade is a large elevated deck. It covers 4,952 square meters, making it the largest among all suburban stations on Western Railway.

  • The main part of this deck measures 197 metres by 22.3 metres, covering 4,393.1 square metres. An additional part measures 39 metres by 10.6 metres, covering 413.4 square metres. A skywalk of 31 metres in length and 4.7 metres in width adds 145.7 square metres of space.

  • To help people move easily between levels, MRVC has installed three lifts and five escalators. One of the escalators is a special double-discharge type.

  • There is also a ramp with handrails that connects the MCGM Road directly to the platform.

  • For passengers with disabilities, tactile and guided tiles have been placed at important spots such as ticket counters, lifts, escalators, staircases, and platforms.

Passenger amenities have also been upgraded. Two new booking offices have been built: one on the first floor and one on the upper deck. Each has special counters for people with disabilities. Large High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans have been added for better airflow.

The station now also has a new station manager’s office and a modern toilet block with accessible features.

Other changes include a clean circulating area, improved lighting, and better ventilation on the platforms. The front of the station has been redesigned, giving it a fresh and modern look. On the Western Railway line, seven stations are being worked on. These include Santacruz, Kandivli, Mira Road, Bhayandar, Vasai, and Nallasopara, in addition to the completed Khar Road station. All these stations will get better platforms, new escalators, modern ticketing systems, improved lighting, and stronger security systems.

Meanwhile, 10 stations on the Central Railway network are also under redevelopment. These are Kasara, Neral, Dombivli, Mulund, Bhandup, Ghatkopar, Govandi, Mankhurd, Chembur, and Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar. Work at these stations focuses on more entry and exit points, clearing crowded areas, and improving access with new lifts, escalators, and foot overbridges.
