Maharashtra is looking to strengthen its textile sector by taking cotton produced in the state directly from farms to international markets, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said.
Speaking at an ASSOCHAM conclave, Shinde said the state has the potential to develop a strong textile export ecosystem by connecting cotton farmers with global buyers and creating greater value within Maharashtra.
Under the proposed ‘Farm to Foreign’ approach, the government aims to promote an integrated textile chain from cotton cultivation and processing to manufacturing and exports. The initiative is expected to help increase value addition and create new opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs and workers in the textile sector.
Maharashtra is one of India’s major cotton-producing states, and strengthening the textile industry could provide significant employment opportunities while boosting exports.
The government is also focusing on developing textile and export infrastructure, encouraging investment and improving the competitiveness of Maharashtra’s textile industry in global markets.
Shinde emphasised the need to move beyond the traditional sale of raw cotton and build a system in which more of the processing and manufacturing takes place within the state. This, he said, would help Maharashtra emerge as a major textile export hub.
