Following repeated concerns over pothole-related accidents, the Maharashtra government has set up a special committee to examine compensation claims linked to deaths and injuries caused by potholes and uncovered manholes on PWD roads. The move comes after instructions from the Bombay High Court.

Under the proposed compensation policy, families of accident victims may receive up to INR 6 lakh in fatal cases, while injured persons could get between INR 50,000 and INR 2.5 lakh based on the severity of injuries.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing each case individually and speeding up the compensation process. Authorities including engineers, contractors, and traffic officials will have to submit reports within a week after an accident occurs.

The Bombay High Court had earlier observed that citizens have a right to safe roads and stressed the need for accountability in cases caused by poor road maintenance.
