Maharashtra has recorded a decline in road accident deaths and fatal crashes in the first four months of 2026. The state saw an almost 8% reduction in road deaths and fatal accidents.

According to data released by the state transport department, here are the stats for this year between January and April:

January to April 2026

January to April 2025

Road Accidents

12,389

12,610

Deaths

5,233

5,681

Fatal Crashes

4,827

5,275

Authorities said district-level road safety planning and technology-based enforcement played an important role in reducing accidents. Several districts and cities reported major improvements in road safety figures. Reports suggest that stricter enforcement, AI-based monitoring systems, and better emergency response measures helped bring down the numbers across the state.

Washim recorded the highest decline in deaths at 37%. Beed and Nagpur City both saw a 29% reduction. Nashik City reported a 28% drop, while Navi Mumbai saw a decline of 19%. Sangli, Satara, and Bhandara reported notable improvements during the period.

The Transport Department said the goal is to reduce road accidents by 50% by the year 2030. As part of the drive, 332 special enforcement squads have been deployed across Maharashtra. These teams are using radar systems and interceptor vehicles to monitor traffic violations. AI-based systems and radar devices are also being used to detect helmet and seatbelt violations.

Between January and April 2026, officials recorded more than 22,000 speeding cases. More than 2.64 lakh motorists were booked for not wearing helmets. Thousands of other drivers were penalised for other violations.

As per reports, the government is now working on improving road infrastructure, open vehicle testing systems, and faster emergency response during the “golden hour” after accidents.
