Even in the peak of summer, mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya are spreading. From January to 7 March 2026, a total of 2,392 cases of these diseases were recorded. Among these, 918 malaria cases and 182 dengue cases were reported in Mumbai alone.

Typically, mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and leptospirosis are more prevalent during the monsoon season. However, data from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) shows that outbreaks can also occur during winter and summer.

During the period January to 7 March 2026, thousands of cases of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya were reported. According to the state health department, there were:

  • 1,335 malaria cases

  • 823 dengue cases

  • 234 chikungunya cases

The encouraging news is that no deaths were reported from any of these three diseases during this period.
