A comprehensive inspection of infrastructure projects was conducted on Saturday as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen monsoon preparedness in Mumbai. The review was led by municipal authorities, during which road concretisation works and large-scale desilting operations were closely examined across key locations, including Chembur and major drainage channels.
It was observed that road concretisation projects are being executed at a rapid pace, with a clear directive issued that all such works should be completed before the arrival of the monsoon season. However, it was emphasized that construction quality and engineering standards must be strictly maintained, even as timelines are accelerated. Concerns were raised regarding the potential for cement-contaminated water to enter drainage systems, and it was instructed that all completed roads and associated pipelines be thoroughly cleaned to prevent blockages.
Special attention was given to desilting activities being carried out in major water channels such as Mahul Nala, J.K. Nala, and the Mithi River. A target of 8.28 lakh metric tonnes of silt removal has been set for the current year, out of which approximately 45 percent has already been achieved by early May 2026. It was directed that the pace of desilting be further increased to ensure that all drains are cleared before heavy rainfall begins. Preventive infrastructure measures were also highlighted, with recommendations that protective walls be constructed along vulnerable drain stretches to minimize overflow risks. Additionally, the introduction of CCTV monitoring systems was suggested so that real-time progress can be tracked not only by administrative officials but also by local representatives, thereby improving transparency and accountability.
Urban cleanliness and operational discipline were also addressed during the review. It was mandated that vehicles transporting silt must undergo wheel cleaning before entering public roads, ensuring that mud and debris are not spread across city streets. Overall, the inspection underscored a coordinated push towards infrastructure readiness, with a balanced focus on speed, quality, monitoring, and cleanliness, as the city prepares for the upcoming monsoon season.
