The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to bring in an external engineering firm to oversee the upcoming pod taxi project. The project will connect Kurla, Bandra East, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) using an automated, battery-powered transport system.

This is the first time MMRDA is hiring an outside engineering team to supervise one of its infrastructure projects. Usually, such tasks are handled by internal engineers or general consultants.

The INR 1,100-crore contract for the pod taxi was given to Sai Green Mobility Private Limited in 2024. A special-purpose entity (SPV) named BKC Connect Private Limited has been set up to implement the project.

MMRDA has issued a tender to choose the engineering company. The selected firm will study the project design, suggest any needed changes, and make sure that all safety and technical rules are followed. A team of 18 expert engineers will be deployed. These engineers will have experience in automation and transport systems.

The pod taxi system will include 38 stations across Kurla, Bandra, and BKC. The pods will be automated and battery-operated. They will arrive every 15 to 30 seconds, allowing quick and frequent service. The estimated cost of a trip across the route is INR 105.

This project is part of MMRDA’s plan to reduce travel time within the city and improve last-mile transport. As per reports, construction will start after the engineering firm is appointed.
