In a welcoming news, the city's first Seafood Plaza, located at Mahim Koliwada, was reopened on Wednesday, October 15, after remaining closed for the past six months. It was originally inaugurated in November 2023.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated the newly revamped Mahim Sea Food Plaza with vigour and community participation, bringing back one of the city’s popular coastal dining spots.
The civic body said the initiative has been carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani and Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. Ashwini Joshi. The reopening event was held in the presence of Assistant Commissioner (G-North) Vinayak Vispute and veteran actor Arun Kadam, among others.
The seafood plaza was designed to be a vibrant culinary hub, offering locals and visitors the opportunity to savor the freshest seafood right by the sea. Operated by 14 women's SHGs, the plaza was envisioned as a unique initiative to support both local tourism and the empowerment of women in the community.
With colourful decor, selfie points, comfortable seating, and live Koli (fisherfolk) music, the civic body said efforts have been made to create an engaging and authentic coastal experience for Mumbaikars.
It is pertinent to note that previously, the sea food plaza had faced several interruptions due to internal political disputes and the monsoon shutdown, which runs from June to September each year.
