Two people, including a two-and-a-half-year-old child, were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out in two flats on the 11th floor of a residential building in Vile Parle West on Tuesday night. The fire was reported at around 10:02 pm at Shanta Bhavan on Church Road, near St Xavier School. The blaze affected the 11th floor of the high-rise and prompted a major rescue operation by the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control around 12:25 am and completely extinguished it by approximately 1 am. Emergency personnel also rescued residents who were trapped in the building.
The two deceased have been identified as a two-and-a-half-year-old child and a 23-year-old woman. Six other people sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The injured reportedly include two people who suffered injuries during the rescue operation.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Authorities are investigating the incident and assessing the circumstances that led to the blaze.
