Strict action has been taken against drivers of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) following a rise in bus accidents in Mumbai. According to information presented in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, 58 bus drivers have been dismissed and 603 drivers suspended for their involvement in accidents and related violations between 2022 and 2024.

The data was shared after a question raised by MLA Sunil Shinde, and Minister of State Madhuri Misal provided details about the disciplinary action taken.

The government also mentioned a December 29 accident in Bhandup, where victims’ families received INR 5 lakh compensation from the government and INR 2 lakh from BEST.

To prevent future accidents, authorities plan to introduce safety measures such as special training programs for drivers, especially those operating electric buses, the use of driving simulators to improve driving skills, and stricter monitoring of driver behaviour on city roads.
