BJP MLA Amit Satam has raised concerns over rampant illegal dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste across the city, urging the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to implement a comprehensive policy. He emphasised that reforms are necessary not only for environmental protection but also to safeguard Mumbai’s coastal ecosystems and drainage infrastructure.

In a letter to Mayor Ritu Tawde and Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, Satam highlighted that Mumbai generates around 8,000 metric tonnes of C&D waste daily, much of which is disposed of illegally due to weak enforcement.

He warned that debris is being dumped in drains, mangroves, creeks and open spaces, increasing flood risks and causing environmental damage.

Satam has demanded a technology-driven system, including GPS tracking of waste, mandatory project registration, recycling plants, and strict action against violators. He also cited Delhi’s digital debris portal as a model for improving transparency and enforcement.

Delhi Model Suggested as Example

Citing Delhi’s “debris portal” as a successful model, Satam noted that such a system enables project registration, real-time tracking, and citizen complaint mechanisms, improving transparency and enforcement.
