Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has responded to social media backlash after her remarks about spiritual leader Gurudev Namramuni Maharaj sparked trolling and negative reactions online. She clarified her position during a press conference, emphasising that her comments were meant as a personal expression of respect, not an endorsement of superstition.

Tawde had spoken at an event in Borivali organised by Namramuni Maharaj, where several social welfare initiatives were highlighted, including the provision of e-bikes for local dabbawalas, rickshaws for people with disabilities, and the inauguration of an animal hospital. She mentioned in her speech that following a spiritual practice suggested by the guru had helped improve her throat problems.

Addressing her critics, the mayor said she had only expressed gratitude and respect and strongly condemned the online trolling, questioning the decency of those attacking her and calling their comments baseless and inappropriate.

She further clarified that her reference to Namramuni Maharaj was a personal expression of reverence, not a promotion of blind belief, and noted that she and her family also honour other spiritual figures.
