The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a major redevelopment of the scenic Powai Lake precinct in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, with plans to transform the area into a more attractive tourist destination while introducing new visitor amenities and revenue-generating facilities.

The redevelopment will focus on the stretch along Adi Shankaracharya Marg on the southern side of Powai Lake. To prepare a comprehensive development plan, the civic body has decided to appoint a consultant, with an estimated expenditure of around Rs 1.75 crore for consultancy services.

Powai Lake has long been a popular attraction for residents and visitors, particularly during the monsoon season when the lake fills to capacity. The area also serves as a cultural landmark, with immersion activities traditionally taking place at designated ghats during Ganeshotsav.

A nearly 1.75-km-long promenade runs along the southern edge of the lake, connecting the Ganesh Ghat and Pawarwadi immersion points. The promenade was developed in 2008 but has not undergone significant beautification or repair work over the past 18 years.

The condition of the walkway has deteriorated further due to ongoing infrastructure works, including the construction of staircases and escalators connecting nearby metro stations and the laying of underground sewer lines as part of a civic wastewater diversion project aimed at preventing sewage from entering the lake.

Following complaints from local residents, environmental groups and public representatives regarding the state of the promenade, the BMC has decided to undertake a comprehensive redevelopment once the ongoing infrastructure works are completed.

As part of the project, the civic body will assess the feasibility of developing adjoining municipal plots and creating visitor-oriented facilities. Plans under consideration include ticketed access to certain attractions, food courts and other amenities designed to make the project financially self-sustaining.

The proposal stems from discussions held during a Powai Lake rejuvenation review meeting in July 2025, where officials directed the preparation of a detailed development plan for the lakefront.

Spread across 223 hectares, Powai Lake has a catchment area of 6.61 square kilometres and supports rich biodiversity, including several species of fish, crocodiles and migratory birds that visit the area during different seasons.

Officials believe that improved infrastructure, beautification and better visitor facilities could significantly enhance the appeal of the lakefront while promoting eco-tourism and recreation in one of Mumbai’s most prominent natural spaces.
