After the pedestrian underpasses (PuPs) are completed, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to construct roofs over the pedestrian underpasses along the Mumbai Coastal Road (South) project, at an estimated cost of INR 19 crore.

Coastal Road Project Overview

Under the Coastal Road project, an 8-lane expressway spanning 10.58 km from Worli to Marine Drive has been constructed, with a total project cost of INR 13,984 crore.

Additionally, a 7.47 km-long promenade has been developed from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which is more than twice the length of the 3.5 km Marine Drive promenade and has become a major attraction for tourists and Mumbaikars alike.

Promenade Access

Two major sections of the promenade have already been opened to the public:

  • Tata Garden to Haji Ali – 2.75 km

  • Lalbagh Nala (Worli Gutter) to B. M. Thackeray Chowk – 2.5 km

These sections feature pedestrian underpasses (PuPs) to provide direct access to the seafront. There are 19 entry points, including locations such as the Akruti Parking Building on Bhulabhai Desai Road, Vatsalabai Desai Chowk at Haji Ali Junction, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road near Worli Milk School, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli.

Roof and Beautification Proposal

Following an inspection in December 2023, officials recommended constructing roofs over the PuP entrances and exits, along with footpaths, cycle tracks, landscaping, and overall beautification of the surrounding areas.

This proposal has now been submitted to the Standing Committee for final approval.
