Resident doctors at Cooper Hospital have gone on mass leave since Saturday after three doctors were assaulted on Friday night. The attack has created an atmosphere of fear, with even senior doctors hesitant to provide services due to safety concerns.
On Saturday night, a woman was brought to Cooper Hospital after a fish bone got stuck in her throat. The attending doctor refused to treat her in the emergency department citing inadequate security. She received primary treatment but was referred to another hospital for further care.
Similarly, on Sunday morning, a woman suffering epileptic seizures was given initial treatment but was also referred elsewhere as senior doctors continued to refrain from handling serious cases.
Following the assault and the ongoing protest, the BMC’s security department has deployed 15 guards in three shifts at the hospital’s emergency ward. Cooper Hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Dev Shetty, said discussions with resident doctors are ongoing and patient services will not be disrupted.
