The residents have argued that narrowing the road would worsen traffic congestion in the area, particularly as several redevelopment projects are underway due to increased Floor Space Index (FSI). They have also raised concerns that a narrower road could obstruct the movement of emergency vehicles.
The residents had earlier raised the issue with various state authorities. Following their representations, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had asked the civic administration in April 2025 to issue a stop-work notice and restore the road width.
The association has also highlighted the importance of Walkeshwar Road as a key connecting route serving areas including Walkeshwar, Ridge Road, Nepean Sea Road, Doongershi Road and the Banganga area. The road also provides access to several important public and heritage locations, including Raj Bhavan, Hanging Garden, Kamala Nehru Park and Banganga.
