The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is grappling with more than 56,000 vacant posts across various departments, prompting renewed calls to expedite recruitment and strengthen civic administration.

According to official figures, the total sanctioned strength of the civic body stands at around 1.45 lakh posts. Of these, nearly 89,000 positions are currently filled, while approximately 56,000 remain vacant. Civic officials stated that the recruitment process for several posts is already underway, with thousands of positions at different stages of hiring and some appointments already completed.

The issue has gained attention following an announcement by Devendra Fadnavis regarding a large-scale state government recruitment drive to fill 70,000 posts. In this backdrop, employee unions and civic representatives have urged the BMC to accelerate its own hiring process to address staff shortages affecting key departments.

Officials indicated that recruitment will be carried out in phases, based on departmental requirements and administrative priorities. The civic body is also reviewing its organisational structure as part of the recent municipal budget exercise, with an aim to streamline operations and ensure optimal utilisation of manpower.

The large number of vacancies has raised concerns about the impact on essential services, with stakeholders emphasising the need for timely appointments to maintain efficiency in Mumbai’s civic administration.
