The Mumbai Metro administration has taken an important decision for disabled passengers. It has been announced to provide 25 percent discount on monthly travel passes on Metro Line-3.
MMRC announced this initiative through its official channels, emphasizing its commitment to inclusive mobility. The discount will come into effect within the next 10 days, once updates to the ticketing system are complete, likely before November 10.
The role of senior journalist and health ambassador Deepak Kaitake, who has been continuously fighting for the rights of disabled passengers, has been decisive. A few weeks ago, Kaitake had demanded from the Mumbai Metro administration and the state government to provide concessions in metro travel for disabled passengers.
The Metro administration has finally confirmed his demand and announced a concession. However, Kaitake has now made a new demand that the concession be increased according to the percentage, keeping in mind the problems of disabled passengers.
Kaitake tagged Mumbai Metro 3 and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on X and said, "Sir, this is a humble request that the concession given to disabled passengers should be determined according to the percentage of their disability. Since Metro 3 is not yet completely accessible, one has to take an assistant for travel. Therefore, please consider giving at least 50 percent concession."
Since Metro Line-3 is not yet completely accessible to the disabled, one has to take an assistant for travel. Therefore, disabled passengers are expressing the opinion that only 25 percent concession is insufficient.
Public transportation plays an important role in encouraging independence for people with disabilities. By introducing a 25% fare reduction, MMRC is not only making metro travel more affordable but also reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity.
Here’s what makes this step significant:
MMRC officials have clarified that the concession applies to Monthly Trip Passes, and eligible passengers can avail it at station ticket counters after verification with valid documents.
