The Mumbai Metro 7A project, connecting Gundavali in Andheri East with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, has hit a major roadblock due to a height-related design issue in the elevated section near the airport.
The issue concerns the viaduct and the overhead equipment (OHE) needed to power Metro trains. Since the elevated structure falls within the airport’s air funnel zone, it must comply with strict height restrictions imposed by aviation authorities.
According to reports, nearly 1 km of the elevated viaduct may have to be dismantled and reconstructed if a technical solution cannot be found. The affected construction work is estimated to be worth around ₹250–260 crore, raising concerns over potential additional expenditure and the use of public funds.
Construction on the affected stretch has reportedly been halted while officials examine possible solutions. The main challenge is ensuring the required clearance for the OHE while keeping the existing viaduct within the permissible height limit.
Metro 7A is a 3.4-km extension of Metro Line 7 and is planned to provide a direct metro connection between Andheri East and Mumbai airport. The corridor is expected to improve airport connectivity and provide an interchange with Metro Line 3.
The setback could further delay the opening of the airport metro link. MMRDA officials are examining whether engineering modifications can resolve the issue and prevent the need to demolish the completed viaduct.
The development has also raised questions about project planning, coordination between agencies and accountability for the potential additional cost.
