Milk prices in Mumbai are set to rise from September 1, 2026, putting additional pressure on household budgets just ahead of the festive season. The Bombay Milk Producers’ Association (BMPA) has announced a Rs 9 per litre increase in the wholesale price of milk supplied by local dairies and cattle farms.
The wholesale rate will increase from Rs 93 to Rs 102 per litre. The revised price will remain applicable until February 28, 2027.
Why Is Milk Becoming More Expensive in Mumbai?
The BMPA has attributed the milk price increase to a sharp rise in the cost of maintaining cattle and producing milk.
According to the association, several important cattle-feed ingredients have become significantly more expensive over the past year. Prices of items such as green fodder, grain, tuvar chuni, chana chuni, corn and oil cakes have reportedly increased by up to 25%.

BMPA office-bearer C K Singh said the cost of producing one litre of milk has reached approximately Rs 98, leaving producers with limited margins at the earlier wholesale rate of Rs 93.
The association has also said that around 40 lakh litres of buffalo milk are supplied across Mumbai every day, with members unanimously approving the latest price revision.
The exact retail price will depend on the locality, vendor and supplier. South Mumbai is expected to see some of the highest rates.

Consumers should note that Rs 102 per litre is the revised wholesale rate, not necessarily the price they will pay at retail outlets. Vendors may charge different prices based on location and distribution costs.
The latest tabela milk hike comes shortly after another increase in buffalo milk prices in Maharashtra.
Gokul, Maharashtra's largest cooperative milk union, recently raised the retail price of its buffalo milk by Rs 2 per litre in Mumbai and Pune. The price increased from Rs 76 to Rs 78 per litre.
The cooperative said the revision was linked to an increase in the procurement price paid to dairy farmers.
Separately, Maharashtra also approved a Rs 2 per litre increase in cow and buffalo milk prices earlier this month following discussions with dairy producers and processors. That decision is separate from the BMPA's latest revision for Mumbai's locally supplied tabela milk.
The timing of the milk price increase could make the impact more noticeable for consumers. Milk demand generally rises during the festive period, when households purchase larger quantities of milk and dairy products.
The increase also comes amid higher prices for other everyday essentials. Sugar prices, for instance, have also risen in parts of Mumbai, adding to the pressure on families that regularly use both milk and sugar for tea and other beverages.
For households purchasing fresh milk every day, the latest revision could therefore translate into a noticeable increase in monthly grocery expenses.
