In a move expected to bring major traffic relief across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has removed over 1.14 lakh metres of metro construction barricades before the onset of the monsoon.

The barricades, installed for ongoing metro projects across Mumbai and nearby regions, had significantly reduced road space and contributed to traffic congestion at several key junctions. With construction progressing on multiple metro corridors, MMRDA has now started clearing barricades from stretches where major civil work has been completed.

Officials said the decision was taken as part of the authority’s monsoon preparedness plan to improve traffic flow and ensure smoother drainage during heavy rains. The removal of barricades is expected to widen roads, reduce bottlenecks, and ease movement for both motorists and pedestrians.

Major barricade removal work has been carried out on Metro Lines 2B, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 9 and 12, while work is also underway on Metro Line 7A connecting Andheri East to Mumbai airport.

According to MMRDA, the initiative is one of the largest coordinated road-clearing drives undertaken before the monsoon season in the region. Authorities believe the move will help reduce commuter inconvenience and improve overall traffic management during the rainy months.
