The Mumbai traffic police penalised over 13,000 motorists for allegedly violating various traffic norms on Tuesday, August 27.
On the occasion of Janmashtami, the cops collected a fine of over INR 1.05 crore from 13,145 violators for triple seat riding, riding without helmets and illegally parking vehicles at public places.
According to the data released by the traffic police, 2,791 individuals were fined for riding without helmets while around a thousand motorists were fined for jumping signals.
The statistics also show that 3,185 people were penalised for causing danger and inconvenience to others by parking and abandoning their vehicle in public places.
Another 1,221 were fined for refusing to ply passengers, as 339 other drivers were punished for ferrying passengers more than permitted.
Meanwhile 290 riders were booked for triple seat riding, 85 motorists were fined for not following the order stated by a police official while 3,810 other actions were taken under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.
About 2300 personnel in the traffic department were deployed and every division has two to three challan machines. While the personnel were deployed to ensure smooth movement of vehicles across the city, special squads were also deployed to look after the violations, said a senior traffic police officer.
