On Wednesday, August 4, an official stated that Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale directed the traffic police to refrain from checking vehicles by stopping them. Instead, he asked them to emphasize on regulating traffic.
An order was issued last week, based on which the commissioner mentioned that the workforce dispensed to manage traffic were witnessed halting the vehicles on congested roads for examination. This invariably results in further traffic congestion.
According to the order, the traffic personnel aren’t supposed to check vehicles, but rather concentrate on managing the movement of vehicles on the roads. The commissioner tasked the traffic police employees to adopt measures against those that breach not just the traffic-related rules, but also the Motor Vehicle Act. It has thus been commanded to not carry out any sort of checks.
The city traffic police in their common nakabandis with local police can only take action if traffic-related norms aren’t adhered to by the vehicles and not check vehicles. He also added that inspectors in-charge of the traffic police divisions will be held liable if the order isn’t adhered to.
