Mumbai Police have stepped up action against the unauthorised use of drones during Ganpati arrival celebrations, citing concerns over public safety and security during large religious gatherings.
The Kalachowki Police recently took action against two individuals who were allegedly using drones to record aerial footage of a Mahaganpati arrival procession. Authorities seized two drones, with their combined value estimated at around ₹1.87 lakh.
Police have initiated legal proceedings under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the incident.
The action comes as Mumbai prepares for a busy schedule of Ganpati installation ceremonies, arrival processions and public celebrations. Large crowds are expected across several parts of the city, prompting authorities to strengthen security and crowd-management measures.
Officials have warned that flying drones without the necessary permission can create security and safety challenges, particularly in densely crowded areas. Unauthorised drones may also enter restricted airspace, disrupt security operations or pose a risk to people gathered below.
Mumbai Police have advised residents, photographers, content creators and social media influencers to obtain the required approvals before operating drones during Ganpati events.
Ganpati arrival processions can attract thousands of devotees and spectators, with major mandals often organising elaborate decorations, music and large public gatherings.
In such situations, an unauthorised drone can make it harder for security teams to monitor the area and manage crowds effectively. Authorities are therefore keeping a close watch on drone activity along procession routes and at other sensitive locations.
Those found flying drones without permission may face legal action and seizure of their equipment, depending on the circumstances.
With the Ganesh festival approaching, Mumbai Police and civic agencies are expected to increase surveillance around major procession routes, crowded areas and other sensitive locations.
Additional police personnel and traffic-management teams are also likely to be deployed to regulate crowds and minimise disruption to vehicular movement.
The Kalachowki incident serves as a reminder that people planning to capture aerial footage of Ganpati celebrations in Mumbai should check the applicable rules and secure permission before operating a drone.
Police have appealed to citizens to cooperate with security personnel and avoid unauthorised drone flights during religious processions.
