Ahead of the upcoming festive season, the Mumbai Police have imposed restrictions on the carrying of weapons, explosives and other potentially dangerous articles across the city. The order will remain in force from August 29 to September 27, with authorities citing the need to maintain public peace and ensure safety during major celebrations.
The directive has been issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act. The restrictions come ahead of Dahi Handi on September 5 and the 10-day Ganesh festival, which begins on September 14.
Under the order, people are prohibited from carrying arms or other objects that could cause physical injury unless they have specific permission from the competent authority.

The order also places restrictions on certain public displays and forms of communication that police believe could affect public order, public safety, decency or morality. These include specified speeches, songs, music, gestures, pictures, symbols, placards, effigies and other forms of public representation.
The order does not apply to government employees and personnel of government undertakings who are required to carry weapons as part of their official duties.
Certain private security and watch-and-ward personnel are also permitted to carry lathis. This includes private security guards, Gurkhas and chowkidars, provided the lathi does not exceed 3.5 feet in length.
Mumbai Police personnel have been empowered to disarm individuals found carrying prohibited weapons or articles. Officers can also seize explosives, corrosive substances and other prohibited projectiles or related instruments.
According to the order, seized articles may be forfeited to the state government.
The timing of the order coincides with two major festivals in Mumbai. Dahi Handi will be celebrated on September 5, followed by the Ganesh festival from September 14, when large crowds are expected across the city.
The restrictions will remain effective until September 27.
The expiry of the order will not affect investigations or legal proceedings arising from violations committed while the restrictions are in force.
Authorities have clarified that penalties, forfeitures or punishments for offences committed during the validity of the order may still be imposed after September 27.
