Mumbai Traffic Update: 211 Motorists Booked For Drinking & Driving on New Year's Eve; 37% Fall In Such Cases

Mumbai police have penalised over 13,000 traffic violators during its special drink-and-drive crackdown on New Year’s eve in 2025.

As a part of this drive, which continued till Thursday morning, January 1, 2026, a total of 211 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. This was lower than figures in similar action on the last day of 2023 and 2024.

On the eve of 2024, a total of 283 drunk-driving cases were recorded, while 333 cases were registered on the eve of 2025.

Offenders in Thane and Navi Mumbai:

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) also witnessed a dip in offences related to drunk driving on New Year’s Eve. Thane recorded 274 cases and Navi Mumbai saw 259 cases.

Under Thane jurisdiction, Kalyan reported highest number of drunk and drive cases. Action was also taken against 45 motorists for riding triple-seat and overspeeding.

Meanwhile, in Navi Mumbai, a maximum of 26 cases were recorded in Turbhe and Panvel city.

Other Traffic Violations:

A total of 13,752 e-challans were issued for other traffic offences, including riding without helmets, signal jumping, using mobile phones while driving, and wrong-side driving.

The police collected fines totalling INR 1.31 crore during the enforcement drive. Heavy police deployment was maintained at major roads, city entry points, and areas frequented by revellers.

Security Arrangements:

The special drive by the traffic police began late Wednesday evening, December 31 where more than 1,700 police personnel were deployed across main and arterial roads, with barricades installed at key junctions and entry points.

The police had set up nakabandis, check points, at nearly 100 locations across the city. At these spots, traffic personnel armed with breathalysers, stopped drivers to ensure alcohol levels did not exceed the legal limit of 30 mg per 100 ml of blood.
