Mumbai, this year, witnessed heavy rainfall in the month of August as compared to previous years, where it was heavy in June and July. Due to this, officials have stated that the lakes supplying water to Mumbai have now started overflowing. Moreover, from June 1 to September 10, 2020, Maharashtra has received over 12 per cent more rainfall than the average.
The city of Mumbai, Ahmednagar and Aurangabad received more than 60 per cent rainfall this year, whereas the suburbs of Mumbai received 59 per cent rainfall.
Besides this, Mumbai received 5.6 mm of rainfall on Thursday and has received 2,480 mm of rainfall so far. Apart from that, the lakes supplying water to Mumbai are currently 98.01 per cent full.
Other districts in Mumbai like Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Beed, Jalna, Solapur, Jalgaon and Dhule have received less than 20 per cent rainfall. Similarly, Thane, Satara, Raigad, Palghar, Nashik, Nandurbar, Buldhana, Washim, Hingoli, Parbhani, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, Wardha, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts received moderate rainfall.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shared the data regarding the same which stated that the lakes currently have 14,18,556 million litres of water, as of Thursday, September 10, 2020. The full capacity of these lakes is close to 14.47 lakh million litres.
