Mumbai records hottest day at 39 degrees in 2026 so far as early summer arrives

Mumbai on Wednesday, March 4, recorded a maximum day temperature of nearly 39 degrees Celsius – the warmest day this year, so far, signalling heatwave-like conditions in the city.

Mumbai's Santacruz observatory saw a significant spike in the maximum temperature at 38.7 degrees Celsius, which was as much as 5.7°C above normal, while Colaba recorded 35.7 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature recorded was 22.6°C, which was 2.7°C above normal. The humidity levels were at 90%.

This also hints at an unusually aggressive start to the summer season.

Prior to this, Mumbai recorded the warmest day of this year on February 21, with a temperature surpassing 36.3 degrees.

The IMD's Santacruz and Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7 and 30.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, March 3.

Yellow Alert for MMR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for hot and humid weather in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. Although the alert has been withdrawn specifically for Mumbai city, surrounding districts continue to remain under caution.The all-time highest day temperature recorded by IMD Santacruz for the month of March was 41.7°C on March 28, 1956.

Forecast Predictions Till May

As per IMD's Hot Weather Outlook for March to May (MAM) 2026, above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures are very likely in most parts of the country, including Maharashtra.

Above-normal numbers of heatwave days are likely over most parts of east and east-central India, many parts of the southeast peninsula, and some parts of the northwest and west-central India during MAM 2026, including the region covering Mumbai and Maharashtra.
