The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the removal of fallen trees and branches, along with tree pruning, at 3,841 locations across mumbai after heavy rainfall and strong winds caused widespread damage over the past few weeks. Restoration work is still underway at 542 locations, where operations are progressing in phases due to challenging site conditions, safety concerns, adverse weather or pending permissions.
According to the BMC, between June 22 and July 17, the city recorded 902 uprooted trees and 1,275 incidents of fallen branches across municipal areas, housing societies, residential colonies and other private properties.
The civic body's Garden Department deployed dedicated teams equipped with the necessary machinery to respond to affected sites on priority. The objective has been to clear roads, restore smooth traffic movement and minimise inconvenience to residents. The department has been separately monitoring incidents on municipal and private properties to ensure timely action.
In municipal areas, 367 trees were uprooted. The BMC has removed 359 of them, while work is continuing at the remaining eight locations.
On private properties, 524 trees were uprooted. Of these, 452 have been cleared, with removal operations still in progress at 72 locations.
The city also witnessed 1,275 incidents of fallen branches. In municipal areas, 552 branches fell, of which 541 have been removed, while clearance continues at 11 locations. On private properties, 723 branches were reported to have fallen. The BMC has cleared 632 of these, with work ongoing at 91 sites.
Apart from removing fallen trees and branches, the Garden Department has also carried out preventive tree pruning at 2,206 locations where ownership could not be established or no responsible party was available. Pruning has been completed at 1,857 locations, while work continues at the remaining sites.
The BMC said its Garden Department control room, ward offices and emergency response teams remain operational 24x7 during the monsoon. Staff, machinery and equipment have been deployed across the city to respond swiftly to complaints and ensure public safety.
The civic body has urged residents to avoid taking shelter under trees during heavy rain or strong winds due to the risk of falling branches or uprooted trees.
Citizens are also encouraged to immediately report fallen trees, hanging branches or trees that appear unstable by calling the BMC helpline 1916, enabling the Garden Department to respond promptly and prevent further hazards.
