According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) weather forecast, a yellow alert (light to moderate rain) was issued in the state on Friday and an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain) on Saturday.

This comes after a historic early onset of the southwest monsoon and a lull in showers over the past two weeks.

On Friday, a red alert (very heavy rain) has been issued for Ratnagiri, while an orange alert will be in place in Raigad and Sindhudurg.

On Saturday, an orange alert has been issued for extremely heavy rain in Sindhudurg, Thane and Mumbai.

The IMD attributed this forecast to an upper cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal.

According to the weather department's forecast for the next four weeks, in the first week (June 13 to 19), above-average rainfall is likely in South Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan as well as most places in Maharashtra.

After that, in the second week (June 20 to 26), above-average rainfall is expected in North Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan as well as most places in Maharashtra.

In the third week (June 27 to July 3), Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to receive below-average rainfall. So, Vidarbha is likely to receive average or above average rainfall.

Thereafter, Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada will receive below average rainfall in the fourth week (July 4 to 10), while Vidarbha is likely to receive average or above average rainfall during this period.
