Travel to the Konkan region from Mumbai will soon become faster and more convenient with the launch of a Ro-Ro ferry service to Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district. This new service is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Sindhudurg district to approximately five to six hours.
The Ro-Ro ferry service will be introduced by the Maharashtra Maritime Board with the aim of improving connectivity and boosting tourism in the Konkan region. Although the service was initially announced in August 2025, it was delayed due to technical issues. Authorities have now resolved these problems and are preparing to move forward.
The ferry will operate on a one-month trial basis. The process of appointing a contractor has begun, and tenders have already been issued. Officials aim to complete the required work by March 2026. Test runs will begin once the preparations are finalized. If successful, the service is expected to become fully operational by April 2026, offering Mumbaikars a convenient summer travel option to Konkan.
Currently, traveling by road from Mumbai to Sindhudurg takes around 10 to 12 hours, and the journey can be even longer during holidays and festivals due to heavy traffic. The new water route is expected to cut travel time nearly in half while providing a smoother, traffic-free experience.
The ferry will operate directly between Bhaucha Dhakka in Mumbai and Vijaydurg on the Konkan coast. The existing passenger jetty has been upgraded to accommodate Ro-Ro operations. This means passengers will be able to transport their own two-wheelers and four-wheelers on the ferry. Necessary facilities have already been developed at both the Mumbai and Vijaydurg terminals.
Ticket prices have not yet been finalized. However, preliminary estimates suggest that passenger fares may range between ₹800 and ₹1,200. Charges for two-wheelers may be around ₹1,000 while transporting four-wheelers could cost between ₹4,500 and ₹6,000.
A large number of people travel to Konkan during Ganeshotsav each year. The service was originally planned to begin before the festival season in August, but technical difficulties caused delays. Since then, residents have been eagerly awaiting its launch.
