Mumbai: Tourists Upset Over E-Bus Fare Increase at Kanheri Caves

Visitors to Sanjay Gandhi National Park are expressing dissatisfaction after the fare for the electric bus service to Kanheri Caves was raised to INR 100 per passenger.

Earlier, buses operated by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) provided an affordable transport option within the park, charging around INR 15– INR 20. However, following directions from the Bombay High Court, the BEST service inside the park was discontinued, and a new e-bus system was introduced by the park authorities.

The sharp hike in fare has drawn criticism from tourists, who say the increased cost along with park entry and cave ticket fees makes the visit more expensive, particularly for families. Some local residents have also raised concerns, stating that the new service primarily caters to tourists and offers fewer affordable options for regular commuters.

Park officials have defended the move, saying that the revised fare will help cover operational expenses and support maintenance and conservation efforts within the national park.

Despite this, many visitors feel the higher charges could discourage people from visiting one of Mumbai’s most popular natural and historical attractions.
