The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of Mumbai’s iconic Cafe Mondegar in Colaba following an inspection that found several food safety and hygiene violations.
The action was taken after FDA officials inspected the restaurant and reported serious deficiencies in food storage and hygiene practices. According to the department, hot food was not being maintained at the required temperature of above 60°C, while cold food storage was not being maintained below 5°C.
The inspection also reportedly found other shortcomings related to food safety and hygiene at the premises. The FDA has directed the establishment to address the violations and comply with the prescribed safety standards.
Cafe Mondegar, located in Mumbai’s Colaba area, is one of the city’s well-known heritage eateries and has been a popular destination for locals and tourists for decades.
The action against Mondegar is part of a wider food-safety enforcement drive in Mumbai. The FDA has also suspended licences of other food establishments following inspections that uncovered safety and hygiene violations.
The licence suspension will remain in place until the reported deficiencies are addressed and the establishment meets the required food safety standards.
